PostSubject: Upgrades for field gun   Tue Jan 15 2013, 01:43

Hello everyone,

I been wanting to upgrade my guns for better performance, Hopefully our gun tech (Reaper i believe?) can help me out a bit.

Sig 551: http://www.evike.com/product_info.php?products_id=30441

My plan is to make this into my primary field gun for long range engagements.
I have already researched a little bit and came to a conclusion that a inner barrel and hop up upgrades is best for accuracy.

My 1st question for this is how exactly does a new hop up improve the gun? For example how is a new hop up an improvement if all it does is add spin to the bb's flight path? Wouldnt a stock hop up suffice?

For an inner barrel i was looking at this: http://www.evike.com/product_info.php?cPath=24_72_378&products_id=24390

Not exactly sure if a longer barrel = more distance/accuracy. For now i will go with the assumption that it does as i heard many different stories.
Stock inner barrel is 370mm and with my suppresor at 6in, the max length is 522mm for it to stay hidden.

Now if i do go with a longer inner barrel, will the cylinder hold up for it? I read some articles where if i get a longer inner barrel i need to make sure the cylinder exerts enough air pressure for the bb. Website says stock FPS is at 390 if this matters at all.

Thanks for your time Very Happy

The SIG 551 is a great DMR very reliable out of the box and great functionality.

For your 1st question. There are many different types of hop ups like R-hop, Er-hop, h-nubs or fishtail, and then you have your buckings rating from soft to hard.

The barrel you want is one of the best ones to get id stick with it.

As far as compression goes not a fond area of mine I've only upgraded an O-Ring for stronger compression

Hey thanks for your reply.

I did a but more research on the hop up unit. It seems R-hop is fairly complex and i dont want to dive too deep as this will be my 1st tech work.

I opened up and inspected my hop up unit. The gun is made by ICS so its hop up unit has the nub connected to it. Heard ICS parts were proprietary so im guessing i will have to change out the whole unit not individual hop up parts for this gun?

As for buckings, how do they differ. Mine just seemed like a normal black soft rubber bucking.

Compared to this: http://www.evike.com/product_info.php?products_id=31081

Or: http://www.evike.com/product_info.php?cPath=24_71_368&products_id=28918

How does a new bucking improve performance over a stock bucking?? Curious since they both just seem like a simple rubber tube.

Yes R and ER hop is complicated (thats why you have someone who knoes how to do it) but the rewards are incredible.

Anyways list what gun you have via link and ill check what you are talking about.

I took some pictures so you know what i mean

My question was are all hop up units compatible with guns? Heard ICS parts were proprietary so wanna make sure.

Also how does a new bucking (from previous reply) offer increased performance?

Not all hop up units are created equally. M4 hop up units are different from G36 hop up units. With that being said there are also certain circumstances where all platforms for example the Masada/ACR made from A&K and Magpul have different hop up units, A&K's is a proprietary unit and Magpul's is a standard M4 unit I believe. After looking I believe that your ICS SIG hop up unit is proprietary and different from most TM and TM clones like JG, Cybergun, and etc.

Your question about buckings. It can increase performance drastically depending on what bucking you use. More than anything it will increase durability and will last longer

When you hit the field again, Simon, hit up Greg (REAPER). He can give you some ideas as well. I know he has been buzy lately and hasn't really tended to this section as much. But he can also help you out.

I can simplify things:D The hopup, and bucking are fine. Trust me, when I was building my M82 Barrett I tried all those fancy buckings the 70degree, the 80, etc. They did nothing for fps or consistency that the stock one wasn't doing already. By wrapping Teflon tape around the bucking before inserting it into your hopup chamber, you can gain 10-20fps with just the stock bucking. As far as barrels go, I guarantee you that 80dollar Prometheus will not shoot any straighter or farther than a 40dollar madbull barrel. If you really want to get range out of your gun, concentrate on the gearbox internals first.

Piston: ICS has what we techs call a 'swiss cheese' piston, swap it for one of the plastic matrix ones with steel teeth. ( http://www.evike.com/product_info.php?cPath=24_75_390&products_id=30044

Piston-head: An aluminum ventilated piston-head will give you long lasting performance and won't break like ABS ones occasionally do (http://www.evike.com/product_info.php?cPath=24_74&products_id=36021

Cylinder: This is primarily what will stump your fps in an ICS rifle. Yours is probably vented for 'short-stroking' purposes to facilitate high rate of compression/decompression you'll want a sealed one for maximum fps and consistency. (http://www.evike.com/product_info.php?cPath=24_348&products_id=27668

Cylinder heads: This you can leave stock, I always do, just wrap the O-ring area with Teflon tape and it will perform equally as good as those overpriced aluminum double O-ring cylinderheads. -and since it's plastic, your gearbox shell will not crack as quickly from wear and tear.

Springs: the backbone of any rifle is the spring, a matrix M120 will net you the desired FPS you will want in a DMR. http://www.evike.com/product_info.php?cPath=24_611_333&products_id=31457

Let me know if you need anything else:)
